On Saturday, March 24, 2018 millions of students gathered in Washington. The march was organized to bring attention to gun laws and legislation. Students from parkland Florida participated in the protest. A majority of those who participated were under the age of 21, "Spread the word! Now you heard! All across the nation! We are going to be! A great generation" Parkland students seem to understand that their fight not only cross racial and class lines but also exists on a historical continuum, and an extension of the civil rights movement. News channels and reporters are informing their viewers daily on new events that have occurred locally, nationally, and globally. In this article, Lapointe points out that the recent bus bombing in Somalia was not reported on many news outlets. On Saturday, October 14, 2017 in the city of Mogadishu ( the capitol of Somalia) there was a large bus explosion killing an estimated 300 people and hundreds more injured. Lapointe uses formal tone as he expresses her opinions on how the tragedy was handled by news outlets. Lapointe appeals to pathos when she uses the valid example of a "bus of schoolchildren who were on there way home" when the explosion occurred. He includes this example to show the audience that what happened in Somalia was just as tragic and saddening for the people of Somalia as if it happened in the US. www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/11/20/the-tech-industrys-gender-discrimination-problem The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is about to complete his first year in office. In this article written by Ryan Lizza, he writes about what Trump has accomplished in his first year in office, and how it may affect his presidency. For most Presidents of the United States, their first year as President is when they accomplish the most out of their entire term(s). Donald Trump has not had any "major legislative accomplishments" so far in his presidency. On December 8th the money to fund the Federal Government runs out and if the G.O.P Tax Bill is not passed, the government will shut down on the 8th. This Tuesday (11/28/17) Trump is meeting with Paul Ryan, Nancy Pelosi, Mitch McConnell, and Chuck Schumer to discuss the issue. With President Trump attempting to have a major accomplishment in his first year as president, as well as, prevent a government shutdown on December 8th; there's no question as to why "All of this make[s] December crucial for the White House." News channels and reporters are informing their viewers daily on new events that have occurred locally, nationally, and globally. In this article, Okeowo points out that the recent bus bombing in Somalia was not reported on many news outlets. On Saturday, October 14, 2017 in the city of Mogadishu ( the capitol of Somalia) there was a large bus explosion killing an estimated 300 people and hundreds more injured. Okeowo uses formal tone as she expresses her opinions on how the tragedy was handled by news outlets. Okeowo appeals to pathos when she uses the valid example of a "bus of schoolchildren who were on there way home" when the explosion occurred. She includes this example to show the audience that what happened in Somalia was just as tragic and saddening for the people of Somalia as if it happened in the US. In recent global and national tragedies, there has been social media support and acknowledgment for victims and the families of the victims which were affected by the event. Social media has many very strong platforms which are viewed and liked by millions of people daily. It unites different people for many different places when event, good and bad, occur. For example, on twitter hashtags trended when there was the bombing in Paris (#Prayforparis). Okeowo states that there was no major social media awareness or support for the victims of the attack, and their families, in Somalia. I personally believe and agree with this, I was not aware that there has been another horrific attack on innocent people in Mogadishu, Somalia. If I wouldn't have seen this article I would have been completely oblivious to the occurrence. Link to the Article by Alexis Okeowo: www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/where-is-the-empathy-for-somalia
In this article written by Jelani Cobb, he is reporting informing us about the tragedy which occurred Sunday night in Las Vegas at a Jason Aldean concert. During the concert a gunman was firing from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel. Through the night and into Monday morning there have been 50 fatalities and more than 500 injuries. In the article Cobb expresses his opinion that this mass shooting is a sign that our governmental officials need to create and enforce more regulations on gun control. He appeals to ethos and uses a reflective tone as he gives a multitude of examples of past shooting in recent years. Recent and previous shootings at night clubs, concerts, and other "attempts to inspire joy" are a few examples of the type of things people in the world are capable of doing. I agree with Cobb's idea that our government needs to take more precaution and create more regulations for weapons. The world we live in now has advanced its weapons in many ways.
